The Russian auto parts market is plagued by counterfeit and inferior products

According to a report by Russia's Lianta Network on March 2nd, the Russian automotive parts market is flooded with counterfeit and inferior products. Due to the lack of control mechanisms, nearly a quarter of automotive service businesses in 2023 were involved in counterfeit and inferior products.
Car owners are concerned that car beauty shops may use inferior components. They are also dissatisfied with the increased repair time and unnecessary maintenance work.
This survey was jointly organized by automotive service provider Fitch Services and automotive analysis firm Grutzjeff Analytics Center. 1800 car owners from 35 cities in Russia participated in the survey. According to the survey, 23% of respondents have encountered counterfeit and inferior products, of which about 30% have complained about engine oil and lubricants, 23% have complained about spark plugs, 15% have complained about filters, and 14% have encountered inferior suspension and steering control components.
Experts believe that this situation is caused by parallel imports, or more precisely, by a lack of supervision and inspection mechanisms for certain commodity categories.
In December last year, it was reported that Russians who own foreign brand cars in 2023 will have to wait for over a year to buy imported car parts, and some parts may even have a delivery time of up to a year and a half. The most difficult to buy parts are from Japanese and Korean cars such as Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Honda, Kia, and Hyundai.
Last year, the prices of automotive parts in the Russian market increased by 7% to 17%. The parts that are not produced within Russia have seen the most price increases, such as a 5% to 10% increase in the price of timing belts and a 15% increase in the price of automotive batteries.
